When Should Class of 2027 Take Their Senior Portraits in Northern California?

Hii senior! Or Mom!
Every senior photographer will tell you when to take senior photos. Very few will tell you why the timing actually matters and how Northern California specifics kinda dictate that process.
If you’re Class of 2027 (or a mom trying to plan ahead without turning this into a full-time job), I would avoid doing a “pick a season and hope for the best” kind of situation.
We got lots of fun hurdles and wins to go through!
Wind, fog, hills that change color overnight, yearbook deadlines, and the fact that you’ll look like a different person by graduation… timing matters more than people realize.
Let’s talk about it: the good, the ok, and the ugly haha!
The very very short answer
July–October is the sweet spot for most Northern California seniors.
Not because of the gold grass being popular but because it’s reliable, cinematic, and aligns with how senior year usually unfolds.
That said… where you shoot matters just as much as when.
Summer seniors (July–September): cute, but a lil misunderstood
Summer is popular for a reason. Warm light, long evenings, golden fields - it photographs beautifully when you plan it correctly.
Here’s what I wish people understood:
Golden hills are at their peak from late May through early November
Urban + downtown locations work year-round (no seasonal stress)
The coast is warm in summer… but July/August is overrated for beaches
Windy
Foggy
(we call this month fog-ust 🙃)
If you’re thinking of a beach session, summer can work - but I almost never recommend summer weekends, and never holiday weekends. Northern California beaches have their own quirks and crowds.
One more thing people don’t talk about enough:
If you shoot in July or August, you will probably look noticeably older by the end of senior year.
It’s not even that that’s a bad thing — it just means your photos will capture the beginning of your senior era, not the end.
Fall seniors (September–November):
If I had to name the most underrated window for Northern California seniors?Late fall. 100%
Beaches are calmer and clearer
The air softens
Light wraps instead of glares
Crowds thin out
Not uncomfortably hot
October and November are actually some of the best months for beach portraits, especially if you want to be able to not wrangle wind.
Yearbook Deadlines
Most yearbook deadlines land in mid-November (some December, some later), which means summer/fall booking seniors often get:
a casual image submitted on time
Winter + early spring: quiet season (great for boys)
Winter is an elite option for boys for a couple reasons...
Here’s why it works:
Long sleeves, layers, jackets (usually preferred for guys)
Softer light, fewer crowds (less people watching)
Shorter, efficient sessions
I actually schedule more boys in winter, and during slower months I offer 30-minute sessions for seniors who want something simple without the full production.
Urban locations shine here. Downtowns, architecture, and textured backdrops.
Spring seniors (March–May): worth a wait!
If spring is your dream shoot, don’t feel pressured out of it.
Spring is when:
Hills turn green again (February–early May)
Florals show up (March–May only)
Seniors look the most like themselves now
College announcement tees or banners can be incorporated
You’ll look older, more you.
Yes, you might have had to submit a different yearbook photo but that doesn’t make spring sessions less viable.
The mistake I see every year (and how we fix it)
Every single year, families wait just a little too long - and then all the most popular dates are gone.
Not because they weren’t prepared. Just cause life moved faster than expected and it probably escaped their mind. Totally understandable.
Here’s the honest reality:
Summer + early fall dates book 3–6 months out
August is often full before spring even starts
I usually start filling July–October dates in January/February
My solution?I build flexibility into my schedule.
That sometimes means:
Shooting at a predetermined location
Stacking your session before another shoot (this would be made clear at booking)
Creating space where there “shouldn’t” be any
It’s not something every photographer offers, but it’s how I like to make sure seniors don’t miss this chapter just because the timing got tight.
A gentle note to moms
(from someone who sees this every year)
Whether your senior is:
Type A or go-with-the-flow
Social or introverted
Thrilled or pretending not to care
This is still a once-in-a-lifetime event...
If it’s not with me, please let it be with someone. Senior year moves fast, this moment just doesn’t come back.

Booking guidance for Class of 2027 (read this part!!)
Here’s the simplest way to think about it:
If you want July–September → book as soon as the schedule opens
If you want October–May → you have a little more breathing room
Expect to book 3–6 months before your ideal month
I have over 150 seniors on my Class of 2027 waitlist, and once the schedule drops, dates move quickly.

The only people who should truly be waiting?
Those intentionally planning late fall through spring.
(And yes — follow my Instagram. Schedule release is very soon.)

One last thing
(a lil Brooklyn appreciation moment)
When my calendar does fill up, you’re not out of options.
You'll see Brooklyn’s name come up on my social media and website so let me explain how we work!
I’m the lead photographer behind Evangeline Lisette. I oversee every creative decision, from locations and timing to the way sessions flow and how final images look and feel. I don’t outsource my aesthetic or vision for the sesh.
Brooklyn is my associate photographer in California, and she’s been personally trained by me. I trained her from the ground up to operate my preferred camera, and work with seniors the way I do. She's learned how to read energy, guide without over-posing, keep things natural, and create images that feel alive rather than stiff or uncomfy.
Here’s how it works in practice:
I design the experience, timing, and locations
I handle all communication (planning, contracts, payments) via email
Brooklyn photographs sessions in California under that same framework
I remain involved behind the scenes to ensure consistency and quality
This allows us to:
Open more dates during peak months
Prevent seniors from missing out just because one calendar fills
Keep sessions unrushed and attention to detail
Choosing Brooklyn doesn’t mean you’re getting the second option. It means you’re getting the same philosophy, same love, and same senior experience this just means more availability and accessibility.
PS.
There’s no single “perfect” month. But there is a smart, organized way to plan your senior portraits in California.
You deserve photos that feel like this season of life. Not an afterthought. If you opened this article and read to the end then I know this is something that's important to you!
When you’re ready, we'll be here! 🤍
