If you’ve been dreaming about senior photos in Northern California, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen photos from Mt Tam and thought:
wait… where is that?
Because when it’s done right, Mount Tamalpais doesn’t look like just one location—it looks like five completely different worlds in one session.
But here’s what most people don’t realize:
Mt Tam is not an easy location. And the difference between an okay session and an unreal one here comes down almost entirely to experience.

Why Mt Tamalpais Is So Special
Mt Tam is one of the most versatile locations in all of California. Within minutes, you can move between:
Coastal overlooks with ocean views
Golden rolling hills
Green rolling hills
Tree-lined roads and shaded pockets
Foggy, moody landscapes
Bright, open skies at sunset
It’s the kind of place that can give you a full, cinematic gallery without ever leaving the mountain.
But Here’s the Catch (That No One Talks About)
Mt Tam is extremely dependent on:
lighting direction
fog patterns
wind exposure
time of year
exact placement on the mountain
Two photographers could go to “Mt Tam” at the same time and come back with completely different results.
One gets harsh light, blown-out skies, and wind-whipped hair. The other gets soft light, movement, and dimension.
Same mountain. Totally different outcome.
My Experience at Mt Tam
I’ve been shooting at Mt Tam for 6+ years, and when I’m in California, I’m up there 3–4 times a week.
Over time, I’ve built out:
a rotation of very specific spots based on sun position
backup locations depending on fog and wind
seasonal adjustments (what works in spring vs late summer is not the same)
I’m not just “going to Mt Tam.”I’m choosing exact locations on the mountain in real time based on what the conditions are doing that day.
That’s what makes the difference.
What a Session at Mt Tam Actually Looks Like
Depending on your package, your session might include:
Multiple stops along the mountain
A mix of open views + more sheltered areas
Strategic timing to catch the best light (not just “sunset”)
Movement between locations to create variety in your gallery
Pairs PERFECTLY with Muir Beach, Muir Woods, & Stinson Beach
This is why most of my Mt Tam sessions are part of my longer experiences:
California 1-hour: Aspen Package
California 2–3 hour: Sierra Package
If you’re booking with my associate Brooklyn in California:
1-hour: Sage Package
2-hour: Bell Package
1 Hour vs 2+ Hours at Mt Tam
Mt Tam is one of those locations where more time = more magic.
1-Hour Session
One primary area
More focused, simple, clean
Still beautiful, just less variety
2–3 Hour Session
Multiple locations across the mountain
More outfit contrast
Time to adapt to lighting + weather
A gallery that feels layered and cinematic
The Best Time of Year for Mt Tam Photos
Mt Tam changes a lot throughout the year:
Spring: green hills, wildflowers, softer tones
Summer: golden grasses, warmer tones, more consistent weather
Fall: similar to summer, slightly softer light
Winter: moodier skies, occasional dramatic fog
Is Mt Tam Right for You?
Mt Tam is perfect if you want:
something natural but elevated
a mix of coastal + earthy tones
photos that feel cinematic and alive
It might not be the best fit if you’re looking for:
super urban or city-based photos
something very structured or predictable
Because Mt Tam is a little wild and free—on purpose!
