If you’re considering a beach session for senior portraits, here’s exactly what to expect, how I plan around real coastal conditions, and why beach sessions are very different from what most people imagine.

Why Northern California Beaches Are So Popular for Senior Photos

California’s coastline offers a look you simply can’t replicate anywhere else: open space, soft light, natural movement, and neutral tones that age beautifully. Dunes, cliffs, blooms, they're unbeatable. Beach sessions work especially well for seniors who want portraits that feel elevated but still relaxed — never stiff or overly posed.

That said, not all beaches behave the same, and choosing the right one matters.

Not All Beaches Are Created Equal

Different California beaches come with different advantages, and I choose locations intentionally based on wind, temperature, and crowd patterns — not just aesthetics.

• Bodega Bay beaches often have sand dunes, which act as natural wind barriers. These are some of my favorite locations because we can easily tuck into protected areas when it’s breezy.

• Marin County beaches are flatter and more open, meaning fewer places to hide from wind — but they’re usually a few degrees warmer.

• Stinson Beach, for example, tends to run warmer than surrounding beaches, which also means it’s almost always busier. Timing and crowd awareness matter here.

Wind at the Beach

(What Actually Matters)

California is windy — especially along the coast — and that’s unavoidable. What matters most is base wind speed, not gusts.

Gusts come and go. Base wind sticks around.

At most of my beach locations, I know exactly where to hide from wind using dunes, cliffs, or natural breaks. Often we simply wait for a gust to pass and continue shooting. Wind doesn’t ruin a session - it just requires experience and patience.

Movement + wind, when handled correctly, actually creates some of the most natural, effortless images.

Timing Makes a Huge Difference

Beach light changes dramatically throughout the evening, and each window creates a different look:

• About 2 hours before sunset – You’ll see stronger pops of blues, greens, and true whites.

• Golden hour – Colors become softer and more muted, leaning warm and golden.

• After sunset – This is where things get really creamy — softer contrast, fewer blown-out whites, and more balanced skies and water.

I plan sessions around the look you want, not just the clock.

What to Wear (and What I Always Recommend)

Simple always wins at the beach.

• Flowing dresses and soft fabrics photograph beautifully in motion.

• Neutral and warm tones complement the coastline best.

• Always go barefoot — shoes never photograph well on sand.

I also encourage seniors to get in the water if they want — whether that’s just toes in the surf or walking along the shoreline. It’s always optional, but it often adds the most natural movement to a session.

Seasonal Expectations in California

Every season brings a different mood to the beach:

• August–October: Warmest months overall

• July–September: Warm, but often foggy

• October–January: Typically little to no fog

• March–May: Lush, vibrant colors with occasional rain

There’s no “bad” time for beach photos — just different vibes.

Crowds + Holiday Weekends

Beach sessions are always planned around crowds. I avoid shooting on holiday weekends, including:

• Fourth of July

• Memorial Day

• Labor Day

Crowds, parking issues, and distractions take away from the calm, elevated experience I aim to create.
